Making My Happy Place

Since we moved to Ohio, I've been trying to figure out how to find my tribe of artsies/friends here in Ohio.  I decided to stop whining about it and to do something about it.  Last night was a great first step.  I invited a group of local people to start a monthly arts and crafts night.  There were seven of us happily creating and visiting in the space you see below (already conveniently decorated from Harper's birthday party).  There were so many things going on - crochet, polymer clay, ornament making, zentangling, scrapbooking, and painting.  I would have taken a picture, but we were too busy having fun!  And I finally made some progress on some orders I started a few weeks back.  (Yep, Heather and Jen, those are your works in progress!)

By the way...You are an inspiration because I've wanted to do just this very thing...gather artists of all genres together and create together...maybe do a simple thing together or just work on what we have but....UNITE!!! Thanks for sharing this...and for giving me a sneak peek at that fabulous wonderment you are creating for moi!

  2. I would love to do something like that too, but where did you find people to invite? I don't know any artist/crafty people where I live.

  3. Hi Jodi! For a few months, I had an art studio downtown. I had a sign up sheet for people who wanted to know if I was going to offer a class. I took that list of addresses - my "mailing list" - and asked them if they wanted to join me. If you don't have a way to do something like that though - I saw on your blog that you have kids (your art is so fun, by the way!). I wonder if you could ask your school art teachers? I've been meeting several of them in our area, and they seem to know everyone! Plus, the teacher might be your first sign up, who knows?! Good luck! I hope you start a group!

  4. What a wonderful thing to do! And I am so glad it worked. Hope you get many great new friends out of it, or at least a good few laughs every month. And the WIPs are lovely!

  5. I have joined a few "meet up" groups but it seems people start the group but don't go forward with it. I do like the suggestion about talking with the art teacher. I'll have to get in touch with her.

  7. Oh Shelly, I wish we lived closer! I am an artsy friendly Ohioan! Glad you had a good time and I need to do something similar someday...when there is no school, no homework, no softball, no laundry, no dinner to cook...it will probably never happen.
